Muhlenberg South High School was opened in 1990 after the merger of seven county high schools into two high schools.  Muhlenberg South High School consisted primarily of students from Drakesboro High School, Hughes Kirk High School and also included some students from Muhlenberg Central High School and Greenville High School.

From 1990 to 2001, Charles Proffitt was Director of Bands at Muhlenberg South High School.

Larry J. Moore came to Muhlenberg South in 1999 as Assistant Director and Muhlenberg South Middle School Head Director.  Mr. Moore was named Director of Bands at Muhlenberg South High School in 1999.  Mr. Moore was the Head Director until his untimely death in December of 2003.  Charles Proffitt and Jarren Calvert directed the band for the remainder of the 2002-2003 school year.

In 2004, Chris McGee was selected as the Head Band Director for Muhlenberg South High School.

The concert band program at Muhlenberg South High School was very successful at KMEA concert festivals receiving distinguished ratings on many occasions.  The Muhlenberg South Marching Suns appeared in State Semifinals 14 times.  In 2006 the Marching Suns made their first appearance in State Finals and returned to State Finals in 2007 and 2008.  In 2007 the Muhlenberg South Marching Band was named the KMEA Class AA State Champions.
